포스코홀딩스가 북미 리튬 공급망 구축을 위해 국내 기업 최초로 북미 현지에서 ‘리튬직접추출(DLE, Direct Lithium Extraction) 기술’ 실증 사업에 나선다.

포스코홀딩스는 30일 호주 자원 개발 기업인 앤슨리소시즈(Anson Resources)와 DLE 기술 실증을 위한 데모플랜트(Demo Plant) 구축과 운영에 관한 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다.

포스코홀딩스는 미국 유타州 그린리버시티(Green River City) 내 앤슨리소시즈가 염수 리튬 광권을 보유한 부지에 데모플랜트를 건설하고, DLE 기술의 상용화 가능성을 검증할 계획이다.

이번 DLE 데모플랜트 투자 추진은 리튬 자원 추가 확보 및 미래 기술 경쟁력 강화에 역량을 집중하고 있는 그룹 이차전지소재 사업 전략의 일환이다. 포스코홀딩스는 ‘2 Core + New Engine’을 중심으로 사업 포트폴리오를 재편하고 이차전지소재 사업 중에서도 특히 리튬 자원 공망 확대에 주력하고 있다.

포스코홀딩스는 미국 현지 데모플랜트의 성공적 운영을 통해 2016년부터 독자 개발해온 DLE 기술의 상용화를 완성하고, 이를 북미 지역 미개발 리튬 염호 투자 및 사업화에 적극 활용한다는 방침이다.

내년 착공에 들어갈 DLE 데모플랜트는 포스코그룹 북미 지역 리튬 사업 확장에 필요한 미래 핵심 기술 선점을 위한 투자라는 점에서 의미가 크다.

염호에서 리튬을 생산하는 전통적 방식은 폰드(pond)를 활용한 ‘자연증발법’이다. 그러나 자연증발법은 일조량이 풍부한 지역에서만 사업화가 가능하다는 한계가 있다. 반면, DLE 기술은 대규모 증발폰드 없이도 농도가 낮은 리튬 염호에서 경제성 있게 리튬을 생산할 수 있는 혁신 공법으로, 북미 지역에서 리튬 자원을 개발하고 사업화 하기 위해서는 DLE 기술 확보가 필수적이다. 이 같은 이유로 글로벌 리튬 기업들은 저농도의 염수 리튬 자원 개발을 위해 DLE 기술 확보 및 활용을 본격화하고 있다.

이번 업무협약에 따라 앤슨리소시즈는 리튬 원료와 부지를 제공하고, 포스코홀딩스는 DLE 기술의 사업성 검증에 본격 착수한다. 양사는 실증 결과에 따라 전략적 파트너십 구축 등 추가 협력 가능성도 함께 검토하기로 했다.

한편, 포스코홀딩스는 아르헨티나 염수 리튬(연산 2만 5천톤) 공장, 전남 율촌산업단지 내 광석 리튬(연산 4만 3천톤) 공장을 잇달아 준공하며 전기차 약 160만대를 생산할 수 있는 양인 연산 6만 8천톤 규모의 수산화리튬 생산능력을 확보한 바 있다.

review of Anson's Green River Lithium Project. 
• POSCO Holdings plans to fully fund the plant, invest in all required infrastructure and operating costs, 
including a site lease fee, for the scaled demonstration testing. 
 
Anson Resources Limited (ASX: ASN) (“Anson” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that it has executed 
a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with POSCO Holdings Inc. (KRX: 005490, NYSE: PKX) 
to collaborate on the construction of a demonstration plant at the Green River Lithium Project (“Project”) in 
the Paradox Basin, southern Utah, USA. The parties will also explore future partnership opportunities at the 
Project. 
 
POSCO Holdings will make an investment decision on the demonstration plant at the Green River Lithium 
Project through the finalisation of its due diligence and internal review, expected to be completed by 
December 2025.  
 
The two companies will also explore potential business cooperation opportunities, including joint 
investment in the Project, contingent on positive feasibility outcomes. 
 
The Green River Lithium Project, owned by Anson Resources’s subsidiary, Blackstone Minerals NV LLC,  
offers compelling advantages, including low forecast production costs, ready access to existing 
infrastructure and a skilled local workforce. The Project sits in a strategic location within the United States 
to support the growing demand for domestically sourced EV battery materials.  
 
POSCO Holdings has been conducting long-term R&D and investment reviews on next-generation lithium 
resources such as brine and geothermal brine for several years, utilising its comprehensive experience in 
lithium extraction and operational know-how, paired with its deep experience in chemicals trading and 
distribution.

larger, commercially relevant scale before full-scale construction. The Demonstration Plant will operate on 
a continuous process basis to closely resemble that of the anticipated future commercial plant as well as 
generating significant quantities of product.
